Every device on the internet has a public IP address, and it carries more context than most people realise. It is the basis of geolocation, network identification and a good deal of fraud prevention.
What an IP reveals
- Approximate location โ usually city and region level, derived from the network operator, not your exact address.
- ISP / organisation โ the provider routing your traffic.
- ASN โ the autonomous system number identifying the network block.
- Reverse DNS โ a hostname the operator has assigned.
What it does not reveal
An IP does not expose your name, street address or browsing history by itself. Geolocation is an estimate, often off by tens of kilometres, and mobile or VPN traffic can place you far from your real location. Check what your own IP exposes with the IP geolocation lookup, which detects your IPv4 and IPv6 automatically.
